Sophomore year is the lowest-pressure, highest-leverage time to test career ideas — and free federal tools do most of the heavy lifting.

Tenth grade is the best year to explore career interests, because nothing counts yet — no applications loom, grades matter but don't lock doors, and the free tools are excellent.
